Electroacupuncture is a fairly recent development within Traditional Chinese Medicine as an adjunct to an acupuncture treatment. It is an increasingly popular form of therapy, and is used for a wide array of conditions.Ithas garnered especially good results with neurological diseases, chronic pain and spasms.
Electro acupuncture works by attaching electrodes to certain acupuncture points which then stimulates the body’s healing processes. It does this by sending electrical impulses through the channels, muscles and nerves. This Oriental medicine technique was developed in China in the 1930’s, and though it is a fairly recent development in the ancient method of acupuncture, the idea behind it corresponds directly with long-held beliefs. Acupuncture operates on the idea that a person’s qi, flows along direct channels which have specific points on the body. When these points are ‘activated’ or stimulated by touch, specific complaints of chronic pain or illnesses can be alleviated.
The electrode substitutes the practitioners’ hand maneuvering of the needle to activate the acupuncture point. This avoids any tiring of the practitioner, and ensures that the patient receives the proper amount of stimulation needed. Also, electro-acupuncture treatments are often shorter than regular acupuncture treatments due to the continued, and often stronger, stimulus.
In more scientific terms it aims to promote the release of endogenous neurotransmitters such as beta-endorphin, a natural analgesic. Additionally, electrotherapy can be effective for treating Bi syndromes (rheumatic and arthritic conditions), channel stagnation and musculoskeletal trauma.
Electroacupuncture should not be used on patients who have a history of seizures, epilepsy, heart disease or strokes, or on patients with pacemakers.
